Wasteland Sustainability Guardian Society of Wilderness
Research Motivation
During one of our classes, we discussed environmental protection issues in Taiwan. Although we live in Taiwan, our environment continues to suffer from destruction. Therefore, we started looking for organizations dedicated to environmental conservation and found The Society of Wilderness. This organization not only actively promotes environmental protection but also organizes various activities to help people appreciate the beauty of nature. We hope to gain a deeper understanding of this organization and introduce it to more people, encouraging greater public awareness and participation in environmental protection efforts.
Research Objectives
In recent years, Taiwan’s natural environment has faced increasing destruction, making ecological conservation an urgent issue. The Society of Wilderness (SOW) is a non-profit organization committed to protecting the natural environment through various initiatives, such as environmental education, habitat conservation, and ecological advocacy. Since its establishment 29 years ago, SOW has expanded across Taiwan, with 12 regional branches, demonstrating its dedication to nationwide ecological issues.
We are particularly interested in the operational model of SOW and its impact on promoting nature conservation education. The organization is structured into 13 specialized teams, each responsible for different tasks, such as promoting parent-child education, special education, and hosting environmental lectures. This multi-faceted approach showcases the organization’s diverse environmental advocacy strategies. Through our research, we aim to explore how SOW operates, assess its role in Taiwan’s environmental protection efforts, and analyze the long-term effects of its educational and conservation initiatives on Taiwan’s ecological environment.
Research Methods
Before delving into the structure and history of The Society of Wilderness, we gathered information from various online sources and compiled relevant data.
Through extensive research, we identified key interviewees and planned field visits.
We conducted interviews with the secretary-general and chairman of the organization to learn about their experiences and the history of SOW. Additionally, we participated in one of their events to gain firsthand insight into how the organization helps participants appreciate the beauty of nature.
After completing the interviews and field experiences, we created posters to introduce The Society of Wilderness to a wider audience.
Finally, we compiled all the collected data and developed a website to further promote awareness of the organization and its mission.
